Becoming a tax attorney requires that you are fully aware of the responsibilities and duties of a tax attorney. Education

A tax attorney needs to have completed a 4 year college degree, 3 year law degree and pass the written bar examination. They also need to pass the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) as required by all law schools affiliated to the American Bar Association. Federal courts and agencies have more specific requirements for a person to qualify as their tax attorney. To become a tax attorney, students undergo training to become a Juris Doctor, the first professional degree given to law school graduates. Tax attorneys need to have strong communication skills, written and verbal. They should also have an aptitude for research, analysis and with logical thinking. Students who have a major in a particular subject may find it useful in pursuing a specific specialization in law (e.g. a prospective tax attorney needs to have a strong background in accounting).

Some of the business traits needed for a skillful tax attorney include being up-to-date on taxation and tax law, an analytical mind capable of dealing with the tax problems of clients. You should be able to choose the best option from an array of options for a tax issue. Most important of all, you need to have the desire to learn.

Licensing

For a tax attorney to practice law in any court, they need to acquire a license from either the American Bar Association or the local State Bar, per the rules set by the jurisdiction’s highest court. The written bar examination is a must with all states for tax attorneys to practice tax law. Some states also require written ethics examination.
