IRS Tax Refund Schedule
If you were required to file taxes and have done so, you might be eligible for a tax refund. These refunds are usually payable as direct deposit to a bank account or mailed in the form of a cheque. If you choose to receive your refund by direct deposit, you can have the refund sent to any of three separate accounts (checking, savings or retirement). Your own name has to be on the chosen account and the refund must be $1or higher.
The method by which you file taxes determines the speed by which you will receive your refund.
If you filed a paper tax return, you can receive your refund within six weeks from the filing date. If you filed electronically, you can expect your refund checks three weeks after the acknowledgment date. Refunds from amended returns are issued within 8-12 weeks.
IRS Tax Refund Status
When you file taxes electronically, you can receive updates on the status within 72 hours of filing. If you filed a paper return, you can get updates 3 to 4 weeks after mailing. In order to find out the status of your refund, you can call the IRS using their toll free number (800-829-1040)
or visit the IRS website online at https://www.4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp . You will need your social security number, filing status and the exact whole dollar amount as shown on the tax return.
IRS Tax Refund Unclaimed
Anyone deemed eligible to file taxes by the US Government must do so. If, however, for some reason you do not file your taxes, you will not receive refunds that may be due. In order to receive unclaimed taxes, you must go to the IRS website and download the tax forms for the year(s) you did not file, fill them out and submit them. www.irs.gov/formspubs/article/0,,id=98339,00.html
There is no penalty for late filing in cases where the taxpayer is due a refund. You will have to file all subsequent years missed when filing for the year in which there was an unclaimed tax refund. Therefore, if you have unclaimed taxes for 2004 because you did not file for taxes, you can download and fill out the 2005 and 2006 documents if you did not file a return for those years also. The IRS will not send your 2004 refund unless you filed for the subsequent years.
IRS Tax Refund Calculator
There is no standard refund for everyone as each individual, family or organization may qualify for certain exemptions (not having to pay a certain amount of tax). You can determine your refund by following the steps outlined on the IRS Income Tax Forms, then subtracting the amount for exemptions from the total due. This will give you an idea of how much tax you are required to pay or refund you will receive. You may also visit the IRS website and go to http://apps.irs.gov/app/stdc/ and follow the steps so the calculator can determine the amount of refund. |
